Business Chamber expresses concern over suspension of tanker berth operations at PE port

The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber says it is concerned about the suspension of tanker berth operations at the Port of Port Elizabeth, taking into consideration the fact that this is an extremely critical fuel supply facility and safety sensitive operation in the region.

This follows the announcement by Transnet National Ports Authority that operations at the city's tanker berth have been temporarily suspended to allow for emergency repairs to the facility.

Chamber CEO, Kevin Hustler says they are troubled to note that no alternative solution is in place to avoid any possible disruption in security of supply.

He urged all parties to ensure that repairs were effected with the urgency required and the tanker berth declared operational in the shortest possible timeframe in order to mitigate against any impact on the local economy.

Hustler said they were, however, relieved to hear that there was already a contractor on site, and that the facility would be operational on Monday.
