Buffalo City mayor apologizes for not collecting refuse

The Executive Mayor Alfred Mtsi, would like to apologize to the residents of Buffalo City Metro for the non-collection of refuse in their areas. Shortage of trucks and protective clothing have been highlighted as the key challenge for this. Most of the Metro’s truck are being repaired and we have been informed that only 6 trucks are operational in the coastal region. Solid Waste department has hired 4 more trucks to augment the current lot. Keeping the City clean is our primary responsibility and we will do our level best to turn things around. The issue relating to protective clothing is being addressed and we are pleased with the progress made. About 90% of protective clothing has been procured and this includes (Gloves, safety shoes, rain-suits, overalls, duster coats, and jeans). The outstanding 10% is due to non-availability of sizes and Supply Chain Management is working tirelessly on that, however we expect the rest of the employees to go back to work and serve the people as charged by the ongoing back2basics approach.

With the limited resources available for now – the Metro will in due course release a new interim refuse collection schedule. We humbly request the residents to adhere to the new schedule and we will update them of any changes to it. The schedule will also have the names and contact details of supervisors for each area so that residents may be able to contact the municipality should there be any challenge of non-collection. Also we are going to make sure that the trucks that are sent for repairs are prioritized as we cannot afford to compromise this important service.

Non-collection of refuse does not only cause discomfort, it also poses a health risk to the people – young and old. We also condemn the illegal dumping of refuse at places where public is served. We understand the frustration people have however we urge them to utilize proper channels to voice their concerns. We also have a Rapid Response Task Team approved by Council which is assisting the Executive Mayor with matters relating to petitions, protests, cleanliness, housing, water and electricity.  The Metro is also pleased to announce that interviews for the HOD responsible for Municipal Services (which is responsible for solid waste, amenities, amongst other departments) were held recently and this critical position will be filled in due course.

The Metro is committed to its vision of being a responsive, people centered and developmental city. Back2 Basics compels us to serve our people better and together we can make this Metro a winning city.
