Budget not enough for the success of National Development Plan

The Minister in the Presidency for National Planning, Trevor Manuel, says the 2013/2014 budget is not a sufficient condition for the success of government's National Development Plan.

Manuel was speaking at an economic symposium in East London on Monday morning.

"All that the budget does is to set the macro-economic framework within which we have to work with. It lays out in great detail what we can and what we ought to do, once these parameters are set we need people across society with conviction and resolve to tenacious implement. One of the issues I think we need to fix in the political discourse is we celebrate sometimes at the wrong point" Manuel said.

Meanwhile, Eastern Cape Economic Development MEC, Mcebisi Jonas, highlighted some areas where he believes the province may have a competitive edge.

"These include accurate processing and that covers a whole range of things from bio-fuel, forestry and food etc. and we also feel we have the competitive advantage in auto green industry, we also have advantages in tourism. We think we can be competitive in the petrol sector and minerals processing" he said.
