The NSRI Port Elizabeth volunteer sea rescue duty crew was activated at about a-quarter to seven on Monday night following reports of a rubber-duck being struck by a breaching whale.
NSRI PE station commander Ian Grey says three men wearing wet suits were on board the rubber duck when it was struck by the whale off-shore of the Wild Side in the vicinity of Noordhoek.
Grey says the NSRI rescue craft brought the injured men ashore at the Noordhoek ski-boat club.
A 41 year old male sustained multiple injures including suspected rib fractures and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
Two other men aged 25 and 35 escaped with lesser injuries.
Grey says the badly damaged rubber duck was towed to the Noordhoek ski-boat club.
