A 62-year-old Port Elizabeth man was pistol-whipped as he fought off two men who tried to hijack his car in Kabega Park on Tuesday night.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the man and his wife had returned home when he was accosted by two men who saw him struggling to open his garage door.
“It is alleged that on Tuesday at about 19:15 the elderly man and his wife had just arrived home and while he was struggling to open his garage door, two unknown persons entered the yard.”
She said that one of the men offered to help but the “complainant was then threatened with a firearm.”
“His vehicle, a Renault Sedan was taken by the two suspects. The complainant grappled with the suspects and even got into the vehicle and succeeded in pushing the driver out of the moving vehicle. The vehicle crashed into a lamppost,” Naidu said.
She said the suspects fled without taking the vehicle.
“Police would like to warn victims of crime that the aim is to survive the crime and to be cautious when challenging a hijacker especially if the suspect/s are armed. Property can be replaced but not lives,” Naidu said.
