Branch manager, former cop, teller and educator arrested for stealing SASSA grants

Four people have been arrested by the Hawks in the Eastern Cape for allegedly defrauding the SA Social Security Agency (SASSA) of more than R10 million rand.

Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, says they were arrested in East London on Tuesday.

They include a 37-year-old former branch manager Palesa Aviwe Sigaqa and her 40-year-old husband who is a former policeman, Masonwabe Madlingozi.

The other accused is a 35-year-old Post Officer teller Busisiwe Geleba and her 50-year-old husband Luyanda Brighton Geleba who is a former educator.

Mgolodela says they allegedly defrauded SASSA of money meant for grant beneficiaries, while also allegedly creating ghost beneficiaries.

They appeared in court in Mthatha on Wednesday morning where they were granted bail of R3 000 each.

The matter was postponed to the 25th of November.
