Boyfriend still on the run after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend with a hot iron

A 30-year-old man from Mthatha is still on the run following his alleged attack on his girlfriend on Christmas day last year.

Thozamile Gawula was charged after he allegedly burnt his law student girlfriend with a hot iron after seeing a photograph of her another guy on her Facebook page.

The 26-year old Mihle Sibembe was burnt in the face, upper and lower body, before being stuffed into a drawer mounted underneath her boyfriend's bed.

Sibembe who was eventually rescued by her mother the following day, was rushed to the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, where she was treated for multiple injuries.

Gawula was arrested a week after the attack and made a brief court appearance on a charge of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

He was released on R800 bail and has since disappeared.

Police have now issued a warrant for his arrest and believe he may have fled to Johannesburg.
