Boyfriend arrested almost a year after skipping bail for brutal assault

An Eastern Cape man who burned his girlfriend with a hot iron two years ago is due back in court in Mthatha on Tuesday.

Thozamile Gawula who's in his thirties, allegedly attacked his girlfriend, Mihle Sibembe on Christmas Day, 2016, after seeing her in a Facebook post with another man.

The then 26-year-old Mihle Sibembe was burnt in the face, upper and lower body, before being stuffed into a drawer mounted underneath her boyfriend's bed.

Sibembe who was eventually rescued by her mother the following day was rushed to the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, where she was treated for multiple injuries.

Gawula was arrested a week after the attack and made a brief court appearance on a charge of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Gawula skipped bail and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He evaded police for nearly a year and was re-arrested two weeks ago.
