A 38-year-old man is expected to make a second court appearance on Tuesday following his arrest for allegedly assaulting a woman in the streets of North End in Gqeberha over the weekend.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says members of the Mount Road Police station responded to an assault complaint on the corners of Green Street and Govan Mbeki Avenue in North End where a private security company handed over a suspect.
It is alleged that officers from Fidelity ADT were on patrol in Central when they heard bone-chilling screams from a female, echoing between buildings.
According to the security company, they investigated the source of the screaming and came across a female being brutally beaten by a man.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says the man was identified as Siyabulela Harmaans.
She says the docket is still with the court and further details of the victim are not yet clear.
An ambulance took the severely injured woman to hospital for treatment.
