Bogus doctors granted bail in Butterworth

The two bogus doctors nabbed on an array of charges including fraud, forgery and money laundering were granted bail of R50 000 each on Monday by the Butterworth Magistrate's Court.

The 61-year-old Josiah Kizito and his 44-year-old wife Henrietta Mukengeshayi were found to be in contravention of the Health Professions Act last week.

Police spokesperson Lwando Zenzile said the couple also dispensed medication without a dispensing license.

Patients also allegedly paid for fraudulent sick notes.

Zenzile said medication and used syringes had been seized at the surgery for further investigation and that the Hawks had also searched the couple’s home in East London.

The pair is expected back in court on the 27th of November.

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) is cautioning bogus practitioners to refrain from endangering the lives of the public by operating medical facilities whilst not registered with the Council.

The Council says in a statement that its observed a complete disregard from these unregistered practitioners who continue to masquerade as healthcare practitioners.
