A bogus doctor and her assistant are expected to appear in the Queenstown Magistrate’s Court at Komani on Friday on charges of Fraud and Contravention of the Medicine’s Act.
Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana says they were arrested in Molteno in the Chris Hani District on Thursday in a joint operation involving Komani Crime Intelligence, other police role players and the South African Health Products Authority.
Brigadier Kinana says one of the suspects masqueraded as a Medical Doctor and is believed to have started her practice back in 2018.
The operation followed after information was received from Crime Intelligence in September last year that one of the suspects was practising without a licence and operating as a medical doctor in Molteno.
It was further alleged that she was not registered with the Health Professional Council of South Africa, but nonetheless was dispensing medication to patients.
Brigadier Kinana says one of the two suspects, the assistant, is believed to be the boyfriend of the bogus doctor.
A sizeable amount of medication, estimated at R700 000 in value, and used and unused needles, were confiscated during the arrests.
The suspects are 33 and 40-years-old.
