Body found floating in Kariega River in February, finally identified

Kariega River in Kenton-on-Sea

The body of an unidentified man that was retrieved from the Kariega River earlier this year has finally been identified.

Detectives from Kenton on Sea managed to trace his relatives and after nearly five months the case is now closed.

Spokesperson Captain Mali Govender says the victim was identified as the 19-year-old Ayabonga Mtwa from Motherwell in Port Elizabeth.

She says a family member told detectives that Mtwa was mentally challenged and that he had gone missing before.

Mtwa's slightly decomposed body has been lying in the state mortuary since February.

Captain Govender says the relieved family can now lay their loved one to rest.
