Bobani survives to fight another day

Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Mongameli Bobani has survived another motion of no confidence.

The public gallery at Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, erupted with joy when the motion by the African Christian Democratic Party was defeated by an ANC majority on Tuesday.

The Democratic Alliance withdrew its own motion against Bobani to support the one tabled by the ACDP's Lance Grootboom.

He said that allegations against Bobani, linked to a Hawks investigation into the Metro's Integrated Public Transport System, were serious and detrimental to investor confidence.

In October the Hawks served Bobani with a search warrant and reportedly seized documents and electronic equipment from the Mayor's office.

Grootboom said if Bobani were to be arrested for fraud while holding the position of First Citizen "it will bring great shame to the City".

Patriotic Alliance councillor, Marlon Daniels, said during debate on the motion that "as disturbing as the allegations against Bobani are, they are just allegations".

An earlier motion by the DA to unseat Speaker, Buyelwa Mafaya, was also defeated.
