Boardwalk to make a splash

Port Elizabeth’s Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World is making the biggest splash in Africa as part of a R1-bn investment by empowerment company Emfuleni Resorts.

The splash will come from a multimedia water spectacular centrepiece on The Boardwalk lakes consisting of over 80 pumps capable of shooting a thousand tons of water an hour through around 100 individual water jets, according to Boardwalk general manager Clifford Ngakane.

Over 800 lights will add colour to the nightly displays, while multimedia presentations will be shown on a 144 square metre screen created from water.

At its climax, the strongest jet will be able to shoot water 60 metres into the air – making it one of the highest fountains in Africa. Over 35 kilometres of cables and pipes connect the different elements of the fountain.

Designed by French fountain specialists Aquatique, the fountain is part of a R1-bn investment which includes a 140-room five-star hotel, international convention centre, smoking casino and upgraded retail precinct.

Aquatique has installations all around the world, including some of the favourite water attractions in Euro Disney, Disneyworld USA, Universal Studios, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, the Bubble Show in Macau (China), and Le Lido in Paris, France.

“It is a pleasure and a privilege to bring a world class tourism attraction of this nature to the Eastern Cape,” says Bongi Siwisa, chairperson of Emfuleni Resorts.

“The multimedia spectacular is The Boardwalk’s Christmas present to the people of Nelson Mandela Bay and all the visitors to the Metro. We expect the first shows to start before the 25th, so it will be an early Christmas present,” she says.

Emfuleni Resorts is a majority Eastern Cape black-owned company owned jointly by Zonwabisi Resort Holdings and Sun International.

There will be daily themed multimedia shows, which will reflect the seasons and celebrate special months, according to Ngakane.
