Boardwalk confirms plans for new development

The Boardwalk in Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth, has confirmed that its planned multi million rand Mall development will be going ahead.

Boardwalk General Manager Mike van Vuuren told the media at a business breakfast on Tuesday that the first phase of construction would start in September this year, after the completion of the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Nelson Mandela Bay...

Van Vuuren said they were now in the pre-letting phase to secure tenants, and that the official announcement of the three anchor tenants would take place in July. "We have received the go-ahead from the Eastern Cape Gaming Board to proceed with this Mall development. We will start construction around September 2018."

Van Vuuren said once they've secured all their tenants it would unlock the funding to allow for the development to go ahead. "In addition to that, Nelson Mandela Bay is the host city to the Ironman Africa Championships in April and the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in September, with the Boardwak as a central hub to both events, " said Van Vuuren. "We did not want to disrupt these two events in any way so as a consequence we decided that any construction would only start after the first weekend in September 2018."

Van Vuuren said that during the month of July, an official announcement would be made on the anchor tenants, the selection of the construction contractors and the monetary value of the project.
