The Bitou Municipality at Plettenberg Bay has cautioned residents about fake voice notes doing the rounds on social media claiming that the water resources are contaminated and thus compromised.
Municipality spokesperson, Manfred Van Rooyen, said these same voice notes have also targeted other local municipalities in the Garden Route.
"This news has no factual basis and is patently untrue," Van Rooyen said.
He said the drinking water of Bitou Municipality is "of the highest quality and subjected through various purification processes in accordance to all legislative requirements, to ensure that the water distributed to all our residents are safe for human consumption."
Bitou Municipality is, therefore, advising communities not be alarmed at the fake news and is also urging residents to stop sharing or circulating these voice notes and texts.
