Bitou mayor closes Municipal office

Bitou mayor, Memory Booysen closed the municipality's doors on Friday after allegedly receiving information of "possible danger to property and life".

The municipality will only reopen on Monday.

This followed after six ANC counclilors along with deputy mayor Adam van Rhyner - a COPE member - called for a special council meeting to be held on Friday to serve a motion of no confidence in among others Booysen and speaker Annelise Olivier and to elect a new mayor and speaker.

This request for the meeting was however turned down by Olivier as it conflicted with certain sections of the Rules of Order of the Bitou Municipality.

An ordinary council meeting scheduled for Monday was also cancelled until further notice on Friday.

In a statement on Friday night Booysen said he wished to assure residents that the "attempted special council meeting" convened by the ANC councillors and Van Rhyner was "illegal and counter to council procedures".

He further said that he had received information of a possible danger to property and life and "in order to protect the municipality he took the extraordinary decision to partly and temporarily close the head offices of the municipality".

"The municipality will be running normally as of Monday. The office of the mayor has engaged with the South African Police Service to ensure the safety of municipal officials and citizens making use of the municipal building," Booysen said in the statement.

"The councillors involved in organising the council meeting will not be allowed to make a mockery of municipal practice and procedures. Service delivery is our main priority and I will be taking further action to prevent any disruption to the effective functioning of the municipality work."

There was however no incidents of violence or disruption reported at the municipal offices.
