Billions to be invested in EC wind farms


 Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism MEC, Mcebisi Jonas says a total of R18.1b will be invested in the 10 wind farms planned for the Eastern Cape.

Of this, compulsory local content spending will amount to R5.4b.

Jonas was speaking this morning at the launching of the R300m DCD wind tower project in the Coega Industrial Development Zone outside Port Elizabeth.

The MEC said the Eastern Cape had secured 876 Megawatts or 36% of the 2-thousand 460 Megawatss that had been allocated following the first two rounds of bidding for South Africa's 10 wind farms.

Jonas added that the Eastern Cape had emerged as the primary national location with regard to future renewable energy generation and bio-fuels production.
