Over R1.48-billion has been paid out to beneficiaries in the Eastern Cape since the National Lotteries Board started distributing funds in 2002.
In the 2013 financial year the province received R154 million in grants that were paid to a wide range of organisations, according to National Lotteries Board spokesperson Sershan Naidoo.
Speaking at a media briefing in East London, Naidoo said the province had received on average nearly 18% of the R2 billion a year the board has to distribute.
This is the fourth-highest percentage after Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu/Natal.
Around 253 million Lotto tickets were bought in the Eastern Cape during 2013.
One of the biggest beneficiaries in the Eastern Cape has been the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown which has received R50 million since 2002.
