Big Walk raises R80,000 for charity

On Wednesday, April 04, Algoa FM and Discovery handed over R80,000 to charity. The money was raised through the 12 annual Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk which took place in October 2011. The Igazi Foundation and CANSA each received R40,000.

CANSA is known for its endeavors of fighting cancer through continued research, education and support in this field whilst the Igazi Foundation raises awareness regarding the prevalence of haemotological malignancies and other blood diseases in the Eastern Cape.

Therefore Algoa FM and Discovery are honoured to be able to raise funds for these worthy causes and recognizes the pivotal role of the community in the Eastern Cape as this handover would not be possible without the passion and goodwill of the community where thousands enjoyed a healthy walk followed by great entertainment.

"We are extremely grateful to our loyal listeners, and the generous Port Elizabeth public who helped to make this all happen. This donation is R20,000 more than we raised in 2010," says Algoa FM managing director Dave Tiltmann.
The 2011 charity event was given a boost through a new sponsor, "We were very pleased to welcome Discovery as our new naming sponsor," says Tiltmann. "Working together, I believe we can build it into one of the premier fun events in the country."

Jody Foster, head of sponsorships at Discovery says, "We are extremely proud and humbled to have partnered with Algoa FM on such a great event. And with the walk taking place in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it was really fitting that this year's beneficiaries are CANSA and the Igazi Foundation."
