The Eastern Cape provincial government has welcomed the decision of the Gauteng High Court dismissing an application to declare government's decision to close beaches in the province unconstitutional.
The application was lodged by the Kouga Local Municipality, Great Brak River Business Forum, and Louis Cook.
Bhisho said the decision of the court affirmed not only the constitutionality of the decision as the government to close the beaches in order to protect citizens from contracting the virus, but also sends a strong message to any person who wants to undermine the decision.
Spokesperson, Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha said now that the matter has been concluded, the EC government would together with all institutions, including Kouga Municipality and its social partners to keep the beaches closed so that it can continue protecting the people of the Eastern Cape.
He said the provincial government said it would continue providing financial support to local businesses affected by COVID-19, including businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector.
Sicewtsha also cautioned the public against gathering at rivers, dams and streams in the Eastern Cape during the festive season as this was prohibited and would be illegal.
