The Eastern Cape Education Department says action will be taken against a school teacher who was filmed beating a Grade 10 learner at Ntabankulu Senior Secondary School.
Dispatch Online reports that the learner and the rest of the class were beaten with a stick when they failed to produce maths homework earlier this month.
The teacher was also heard swearing at the learner.
Bhisho Education Department spokesperson, Loyiso Pulumani, says the incident is disappointing, reiterating that corporal punishment is illegal.
"It seems as much as we continue to conduct advocacy campaigns, condemning and discouraging the use of corporal punishment, it would seem that some of our teachers continue to use it . We will certainly have to act on this matter. The district manager has been to the school already, who will conduct their own investigation. The department will also deal with this matter," Pulumani said.
