The Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements says new guidelines aimed at improving the quality of RDP houses have been approved.
Department spokesperson, Lwandile Sicwetsha, says the new guidelines provided for the plastering of internal and external walls, running water inside the house, an inside bathroom as well as a solar geyser.
He says the new guidelines also call for floor tiling, a ceiling and the fencing of the yard.
Sicwetsha says the province is aiming to build a thousand houses by the end of the year.
