The Eastern Cape Government has abolished 1 493 unfunded posts in the provincial administration between April 2012 and April this year.
That's according to Public Service and Administration Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, in a written reply to parliamentary questions.
She said the initial focus of the clean-up of the personnel salary system had been on un-funded vacancies in national and provincial government.
Sisulu says as a result, a total of 217 435 posts had been abolished at the two levels of government, which had contributed substantially to the decrease in the vacancy rate in the Public Service, from 16% in March 2012 to 8% at the end of February this year.
