Police Minister Bheki Cele will engage with residents of Port Elizabeth’s Northern Areas on Monday on the scourge of gang violence plaguing their communities.
He will be accompanied on his public engagements at the Chatty Community Centre by Police Commissioner, General Khehla Sitole.
Buses have been organised to ferry community members to the meeting after Cele promised to return. He paid a brief visit to the Metro last week where he announced that a task team had been deployed as the first step in the introduction of an anti-gang unit as had been the case in Cape Town.
Minister Cele’s visit to Nelson Mandela Bay also comes in the wake of the recent sleep-in protest outside the office of the Premier Phumulo Masualle by members of the Khoi and San.
Among the protesters was ANC MPL, Christian, Martin, who slept in a coffin to emphasise the seriousness of gang violence in Port Elizabeth which is estimated to have claimed more than 80 lives since April.
