Buffalo City Municipality has welcomed the arrest of 6 people who allegedly defrauded the metro of nearly R12m.
The Hawks in the Eastern Cape arrested 3 suspects on Thursday, including a municipal employee in East London, and 3 more in Mthatha.
The arrests are a sequel to the findings of a forensic investigation by Deloitte's into contracts awarded in 2008 for the municipality's beautification pilot programme.
Municipality spokesperson, Thandy Matebese, says the Deloitte probe began after certain contract irregularities were picked up.
"In terms of the municipal finance management act Section 32 we are compelled that if there is indication where there is prima facie evidence of criminal act e must hand over such a report to the police to do their job. The Justice Department is now dealing with this matter" Matebese said.
