The Buffalo City Metro (BCM) launched an operation at China Mall in East London this week to seize illegal pesticides and insecticides sold illegally at the mall in Arcadia.
The Department of Agriculture confirmed that the pesticides were illegal and goods worth just under R9 000 were confiscated.
The Metro says other places known to be selling these products will be raided in due course.
Pesticides are highly regulated substances in South Africa and retailers are bound by the statutes of Act No. 36 of 1947
The products will now be disposed of through the services of a registered hazardous waste collector.
BCM says their intention is to remove all the illegal products from all retailers within the Metro, including small traders and spaza shops.
