Another suspect arrested for Baywest robbery

The Hawks have arrested an 11th suspect believed to be part of a syndicate linked to the armed robbery at a jewellery store at the Baywest Shopping Mall in Gqeberha last month.

The 25-year-old suspect was arrested in Gauteng.

National spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale says a preliminary investigation has linked the suspect to a spate of jewellery store robberies committed around the country over the past seven months.

She said his co-accused were arrested just hours after the Baywest robbery on the N10 just outside Nxuba, formerly Cradock, on 21 September.

In an earlier statement police said they were arrested by a team comprising of SAPS Cradock Vispol members, SAPS Cookhouse Highway patrol, SAPS Cradock K9, and a private security company, held way-lay duties."

Ten suspects were arrested traveling in two cars while two firearms and stolen jewellery valued at around R1 million recovered.

Police said Crime Intelligence Eastern Cape also confirmed that the arrested suspects are part of a syndicate linked to robberies in Gauteng, North West, and other crimes in KZN.

They were detained on charges of illegal possession of firearms and the possession of suspected stolen property.
