Buffalo City Metro says it has approached the Department of Human Settlements to assist with temporary emergency structures to house over 100 people affected by heavy weekend flooding.
BCM spokesperson, Samkelo Ngwenya, said two wards in Duncan Village were affected where 150 people need shelter.
He said a woman was killed when she was struck by a vehicle at an accident scene in the West Bank. No further details were provided.
“Other areas that have been affected are Mzamomhle, Reeston, and Ducats.”
Ngwenya said there’s also a need for “critical intervention” to assist a 72-year-old woman whose home was severely affected.
“In Ward 6, 104 people have been affected by floods with the main challenge being shacks that are built on the floodline…”

Buffalo City Metro Executive Mayor Councilor Princess Faku has held engagements with the Ministry of Human Settlements to assist with 500 temporary structures, Ngwenya said.
He said the mayor also visited affected areas on Sunday with members of the Mayoral Committee, ward councillors, and Disaster Management teams.
The organisation Gift of the Givers is also assisting with disaster relief before its team moves to Nelson Mandela Bay to assist there.
Ngwenya said BCM has established a Disaster Management Operations Centre to address the situation while residents have been urged to be on high alert.
The heavy downpours also placed BCM’s stormwater system under severe pressure with numerous blockages reported across the Metro, including Settlersway, Biko bridge from Westbank to East London CBD, among others.
“The Metro is advising motorists to be cautious around flooded roads in Mdantsane, Amalinda Westbank, and Fynbos,” he said.
