BCM councilor and husband in court for EL double murder

The man who was arrested on Tuesday last week on two counts of murder appeared briefly in the East London Magistrate's court on Monday alongside his wife.

Mthuthuzeli Matiwane appeared alongside his wife Nokulunga, a Buffalo City Municipality ward Councillor, who was arrested three days later and also charged with murder.

Their 15-year-old disabled daughter was burnt to death when some 500 angry community members torched their home in Reeston, shortly after the murder of the two women on the Buffalo pass road.

The murder of the two women is reportedly linked to a job for cash arrangement that the Councillor allegedly had with one of the victims.

The two women were allegedly kidnapped and shot near the Buffalo Pass Road before being thrown off a cliff. One of the victims managed to crawl to the road where she was spotted by a traffic officer.

She managed to give police vital information, which led to the arrest of Matiwane. She died in hospital the next day.

Her friend was declared dead on the scene.

Mthuthuzeli was remanded in custody and his wife granted bail of R500

They will appear in court again on Friday.
