BCM Councillor's disabled daughter dies in arson attack

Buffalo City Municipality has instituted an investigation into events surrounding a councillor whose home was torched in Reeston on Thursday by angry community members.

The 15-year-old physically disabled daughter of Ward 13 councillor, Nokulunga Matiwane, died in the blaze.

It's speculated that the attack on the councillor's home was a sequel to the arrest of her husband, Mabuto, for the murder of two women who were shot near Buffalo Pass Road on Tuesday night.

The victims were Bulelwa Mpitipiti and her friend Nomboniso Ntwana, both reportedly Sangoma's.

Mpitipiti, who was in her fifties, was found dead on the scene while Ntwana was found by a passing traffic officer.

Ntwana, who was able to give important information to police leading to an arrest, however died in hospital the same evening.

Their murder is reportedly linked to a jobs for cash arrangement that the Councillor allegedly had with one of the victims.

Mabuto Matiwane appeared in court on Thursday where he was remanded in custody until Monday when he's expected to apply for bail.

Meanwhile, Buffalo City spokesperson, Bathandwa Diamond, said they are saddened by the events that have occurred the past couple of days and called for calm.

"We call upon the community to be calm and allow law enforcement agencies to control the situation. We can confirm that our fire, traffic and law enforcement agencies were at the scene; though they experienced difficulties in intervening due to the volatile situation, calm was eventually restored," Diamond said.

He said the Speaker of Council, Cllr Alfred Mtsi, will oversee the matter and "he will be guided by safety and security agencies in dealing with the matter."
