BCM assures public that illegal dumping of medical waste is not contaminating water

Buffalo City Metro (BCM) has assured residents that medical waste that was found at Bridle Drift Dam is not contaminating drinking water.

The Metro was responding to the complaints by the Mdantsane community that businesses have turned Bridle Drift Dam into a medical waste dump site.

BCM spokesperson Samnkelo Ngwenya, says the water gets treated and purified at Umzonyana Water Treatment Works and regularly tested.

He says while the disposal of medical waste is a Provincial Government responsibility, BCM is liaising with the Provincial Government, and that the clearing of the site has been commissioned.

Ngwenya says Buffalo City has also committed to monitoring waste disposal while calling on businesses to stop endangering people's lives by dumping hazardous waste illegally.

He says it is highly disturbing that there are companies who are deliberately exposing people to such hazardous actions.

"No Dumping" signs will also be erected at the site.
