Disaster management teams in Buffalo City Metro had their hands full on Monday after heavy rain and strong winds flooded homes, ripped roofs off homes in peri-urban areas and led to shacks being washed away.
BCM spokesperson, Samnkelo Ngwenya, said many areas in the Metro were also affected by power outages, with teams dispatched to deal with fallen street poles and wires and sub-stations that had been impacted by the heavy rain and strong wind.
"Communities must not attempt to repair or be in contact with wires that are hanging as this is dangerous. Rather report these," he said.
He said teams were sent to Ward 20, Zone 8 in Mdantsane where shacks were reported to have been washed away and some damaged by the wind.
Ngwenya said they were also informed of houses being damaged and roofs being blown off on Sunday night in Macleantown on the City's outskirts.
He said BCM issued warnings to residents with the history of January 8 in mind when flash floods displaced hundreds of people and resulted in nine fatalities.
The SA Weather Service issued a level 2 yellow warning for disruptive rain for the Eastern Cape and BCM for Monday.
