A man who allegedly raped a girl on her way to school on Monday morning was speedily arrested on the N2 freeway.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the 18-year-old victim was standing in Seaview Road in Chelsea to wait for her transport when she was approached by an unknown man.
She says the man told the teenager to walk with him and when she refused he grabbed her by the arm into nearby bushes where he allegedly raped her and stole her phone.
Colonel Naidu says the victim managed to get home and immediately reported the incident.
She says a private security company started searching for the suspect and was assisted by neighbourhood watch.
The 29-year-old suspect was eventually spotted on the N2 freeway near Baywest where he was subsequently arrested.
The victim's phone was found in his possession.
The man is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
The District police Commissioner of Nelson Mandela Bay Major General Thembisile Patekile commended the efforts of the security company and the neighbourhood watch.
