Bay police arrest four suspects ‘terrorising’ local communities

File

Gqeberha police have arrested four suspects they say had been terrorising the communities of Kwazakhele and New Brighton.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre’ Beetge, said a search is also underway for a fifth suspect who managed to evade arrest following a high-speed chase on Saturday night.

He said it’s alleged that the suspects had been conducting a crime spree in these areas, committing car hijackings, and house robberies.

Beetge said their last vehicle hijacked was on Saturday night when they robbed a homeowner of an Audi Q3 in Nobatana Street in Kwazakhele.

He said SAPS members spotted the stolen vehicle at around 21:30 and a high-speed chase ensued, with the suspects firing on police before crashing into the boundary wall of a house.

“On searching the vehicle, nine suspected stolen cell phones, a 9mm pistol with a magazine and ammunition, and two sets of vehicle keys were found.

“A 17-year-old suspect sustained a gunshot wound in his foot and was taken to hospital for treatment.  All four suspects are aged between 17 and 20 years old,” Beetge said.

He said they would appear in court on Monday on charges of attempted murder, possession of a hijacked vehicle and suspected stolen property, and the illegal possession of a firearm.

“More charges may be added as the investigation unfolds,” he said.
