The man accused of murdering Nelson Mandela Bay physiotherapist Marolien Schmidt is alleged to have stabbed her several times in her chest and abdomen.
Simxolele Zitshu, 31, made his first appearance in the Gqeberha High Court on Tuesday, after the case had previously been transferred from the Magistrates Court.
According to the indictment, a post-mortem examination revealed that Schmidt died as a result of "pentetrating incised wounds of the chest and abdomen."
The state alleges that Zitshu broke into Schmidt's home in Sherlock Street, in Richmond Hill, during the early morning hours, on Women's Day.
He allegedly broke a window to gain entry into her home.
When Schmidt saw Zitshu in her home, she confronted him and he started stabbing her with a knife that he had in his possession, according to the charge sheet.
Concerned neighbours called the police when they heard screams.
Schmidt was taken to the St. George's Hospital, where she was declared dead.
According to the charge sheet, the only item that had been taken from her home, was a cell phone.
Contrary to his previous court appearances, Zitshu was silent in court on Tuesday.
Advocate Jodene Coertzen of Legal Aid South Africa indicated that she would represent him going forward.
The case was postponed to Wednesday for a possible plea.
