Bay clinic robbed, staff held at gunpoint

Eastern Cape Health Department MEC Nomakhosazana Meth has condemned the robbery of the KwaMagxaki Clinic in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Wednesday's robbery is the latest in a spate of attacks on health facilities and healthcare workers in the Metro.

During the incident, clinic staff were robbed at gunpoint of their valuables and cellphones and were locked up, after which the perpetrators fled with the keys to the facility.

MEC Meth described the incident as an act of thuggery according to her spokesperson, Mkhululi Ndamase.

He added that MEC Meth was calling on communities to work with the Department and the Police to ensure that the suspects are brought to book.

On Monday, the Wells Estate and Motherwell Unit 2 clinics were padlocked, allegedly by people demanding that the Department should employ former contracted healthcare workers.

Meth said this despite the Department having serious budgetary constraints and having started the current financial year with a R4.4-billion shortfall because of medico-legal claims accruals and payables, they have been making efforts to source more funding.
