A devastating fire in the early hours of Monday morning has all but destroyed the Bathurst 1820 Centenary Hall, which is also a heritage site.
Ndlambe Municipal Manager, Rolly Dumezweni, said the hall was badly damaged in the fire.
He told Algoa FM News that they also received reports of people seen running away from the building after the fire was reported at about 4 am by Multi-Security.
Dumezweni said the Ndlambe Municipality's fire services were able to save a portion of the building housing municipal offices and documentation.
He said the rest of the hall has been destroyed.
"We'll have to open a case with the police because it's our property. There needs to be an investigation that has to be done by the police. We also have to get a structural engineer to determine the way forward in terms of the building," he said.
Dumezweni said the hall was a heritage site, and Council would need to establish the facts first before a decision can be taken on the way forward.
