Bad weather hampers efforts to reach plane wreck

Attempts to reach the site where a Cessna Citation jet crashed near Mossel Bay will continue on Friday.

The wreckage of the plane was located on Thursday afternoon, but bad weather hampered efforts to reach the site in a mountainous area near the coastal town.

The aircraft, which belongs to the Civil Aviation Authority, left George Airport on Thursday morning at around 10 AM and contact was lost with it shortly afterwards.

"The crew, two males and one female, took off at 10:40 from the George Airport on a flight calibration mission of navigational aids of the same airport," said CAA spokesperson, Phindiwe Gwebu.

She said the air traffic control tower could not make contact with the aircraft ten minutes after take-off and "the Air Traffic and Navigation Services immediately activated search and rescue."
