A baby humpback whale has washed up on the rocks next to the East London aquarium.
This prompted city authorities to close Eastern and Orient beaches because of an increase in shark activity on Monday.
Marine services chief Sharney Tilney says the whale carcass is a few days old and that beach staff will be removing it off the rocks as soon as possible.
She says at this time of year, Humpback whales are moving along the Eastern Cape coastline towards the Western Cape which is their main feeding ground.
Tilney says there is a lot of calving happening at the moment and this particular calf could have died for a number of reasons.
