Aviation Authority to investigate fatal PE plane crash

The investigation into Monday's light aircraft crash in Port Elizabeth, which left one person dead, is set to continue.

Port Elizabeth police said one person was killed when the Fish Eagle aircraft crashed into a ridge on the southern side of the Baakens Valley below First Avenue, Walmer.

The 56-year-old Rego Burger was a well-known pilot in the city and has escaped death once before.

In November 2015, Burger made headline news when he crashed his X-294 Motorglider at Lady Slipper during a test flight.

Burger told Algoa FM News shortly after the accident that he had instantaneous oil pressure failure and his engine failed a few seconds later.

Burger escaped with only a few scratches in what he himself called a miracle.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the wreckage from Monday's accident would be taken to the Port Elizabeth Airport for further forensic investigation by the Civil Aviation Authority.

Meanwhile, the CAA says a team of accident and incident investigators has been dispatched, to begin with the investigation.

CAA spokesperson, Kabelo Ledwaba says the completion of an investigation is marked by the release of a final accident report, which would contain the probable cause and safety recommendations aimed at improving the levels of safety and preventing a similar accident.

Investigations can vary in complexity and may at times take a significant time to complete. However, in instances where an investigation takes longer than 12 months, the investigation team would then issue an interim statement to indicate progress at that particular point.
