At least seven people, including well-known Afrikaans singer, Jacques de Coning, were killed in accidents reported in the Eastern Cape this past weekend.
Fifty-one-year-old De Coning died in a head-on collision between two cars on the R72 between Port Alfred and Kenton on Sea on Sunday.
Police said that the driver of the other vehicle was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.
Meanwhile, four people were killed when a car hit a trailer behind another car on the N2 near Butterworth on Sunday.
Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, said three men and a woman were declared dead at the scene while another woman survived but was rushed to hospital.
In Port Elizabeth a five-year-old child was killed after being hit by a taxi while trying to cross Standford Road with his mother on Sunday. The mother was not injured.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, also said that a 42-year-old woman was killed after being hit by a car on Beach Road in Summerstrand in the early hours of Sunday morning.
She said the driver of the vehicle was arrested on a charge of culpable homicide and drunken driving.
He will appear in court soon.
