Members of the Gqeberha Anti-Gang Unit seized seven firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition during a raid on a house in the Northern Areas this week.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says AGU members executed a search warrant at a house in Parkside on Tuesday, where they seized two firearms from the main house.
Its alleged that the owner did not comply with the safekeeping of the firearm in terms of the Firearms Control Act and that the man's firearm license had also expired.
"An enquiry docket was opened for further investigation," said Colonel Naidu.
During a search of an outbuilding on the same premises, police found a further five firearms, two magazines for an R5 rifle, and 131 rounds of ammunition.
"The serial numbers on all the firearms were filed off. A 28 year-old suspect was arrested and detained on a charge of possession of prohibited firearms and illegal possession of ammunition," said Colonel Naidu.
She added that during the early hours of Friday morning, AGU members received and followed up on information of a firearm in the back yard of a church on the corners of Booysen Park Drive and Coriander Road in Bethelsdorp.
"The yard was thoroughly searched and a navy blue bag was found with a rifle inside. An enquiry docket was opened and the firearm confiscated," she said.
"The proliferation of firearms remains an operational priority for the police hence every effort must be made to reduce the circulation of illegal firearms."
