SAPS

An armed robbery suspect has been killed in a shootout with Eastern Cape police and private security at Ngcingwane Location outside Dutywa.

Three other men, aged 23 to 25, were arrested and are expected to appear in court soon.

Captain Siphokazi Mawisa says five men entered a shop in the locality on Saturday afternoon and robbed the owner of an undisclosed amount of cash, tobacco and cellphones.

The sixth suspect was waiting in a getaway vehicle.

Captain Mawisa says the owner alerted his armed response who gave chase.

A shootout ensued between the security officials and the suspects, leaving a 31 year old man fatally wounded.

The other suspects fled the scene with the security and police in hot pursuit and three of them were arrested in a nearby village.

Police confiscated two firearms with their serial numbers filed off, 14 rounds of ammunition and a magazine.

The BMW used in the robbery was also seized by police.
