The rhino that survived an horrific poaching incident in the Eastern Cape in March 2012 has suffered another setback.
Two rhino died in the incident but Thandi become a worldwide figure of hope in the poaching crisis, with millions watching her healing process via social media.
Her facial wounds recovered fully, but this week she suffered a new facial injury which will require renewed surgical intervention.
Dr Will Fowlds, the appointed vet for Investec Rhino Lifeline, says its suspected that one of the bull rhino, recently introduced to restore breeding capacity at the Kariega Game Reserve, may have been the cause of the injury.
"We thought her face was strong enough to hold out the social rigours of rhino life but it appears that a new bull has gouged her face quite badly. Now we have to go back to the drawing boards as far as rehabilitating her face is concerned to give her face a better chance of coping in the future," Fowlds said
