Another EC councillor and son shot

File

Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance MEC, Zolile Williams, has condemned the shooting of another local government councillor in Port St Johns and the wounding of his son.

The Department said the assailants also torched the home of councillor Xolile Moni on Sunday night.

Spokesperson, Pheello Oliphant, said they were both taken to the hospital where they are receiving treatment.

The shooting and arson attack comes on the heels of the arson attack on the home of Mayor Nomvuzo Mlombile-Cingo on 4 October, but no one was at home.

Two days later, on 6 October, the home of the Council Speaker was also set alight, while the week before, a councillor at the Ingquza Hill Municipality and his son were shot and killed.

MEC Williams said has noted this trend in the two municipalities with growing concern.

He said the arson attack on the Port St Johns Mayor’s home was preceded by her “receiving death threats from unknown people who wanted her to appoint local people to management positions or else she resigns as a Mayor.”

Williams will the seaside resort town on Tuesday in the company of the Executive Mayor of O.R. Tambo District Municipality, Mesuli Ngqondwana, for engagements with all stakeholders.
