Another delay as Schroeder killers to be sentenced in July

Kristina Adler who obtained a medical certificate declaring her unfit to attend her sentencing proceedings

A German couple who killed a fellow countryman and farm owner Claus Schroeder over a decade ago will only hear their fate in July.

The sentencing proceedings of 42-year-old Jens Leunberg and his former partner the 44-year-old Kristina Adler were postponed in the Port Elizabeth High Court yet again on Thursday.

Adler, who suffers from depression and panic disorder requested medical assistance before Thursday's sentencing.

Adler, who is currently out on bail with strict conditions, obtained a medical certificate declaring her unfit to attend proceedings.

State Prosecutor Marius Stander wanted sentencing to proceed and said there would be no prejudice if Adler was not in court.

Defence advocate Richard Crompton disagreed and said that the cases were linked and that the couple had two children together.

Judge Thembekile Malusi ruled in favour of the defence and postponed sentencing to the 20th of July.

Leunberg was taken back down to the holding cells.

In 2007, the couple expressed interest in purchasing Schroeder's farm in the Hankey district and a memorandum of agreement was drawn up to sell the property for an amount of R8.5 million.

The couple then offered him fake Bank documents as a guarantee.

When Schroeder did not receive his money after a year he started asking questions.

Leunberg then lured him to a kloof where he was killed.

Schroeder's body was never found but Judge Malusi was satisfied that the State proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Leunberg, who has been in custody for almost a decade, was found guilty of murder and two counts of fraud while Adler was found guilty of being an accessory to murder and two counts of fraud.
