Eastern Cape police have confirmed another cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in which a security guard was injured and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken.
According to information the incident took place on the N6 between East London and Stutterheim before sunset when heavily armed suspects stole an undisclosed amount of money.
Two guards sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital.
Images on social media show that a security vehicle had been blown up.
This will be the sixth CIT robbery in the Province in less than five months.
On 1 May 2023, a police officer was killed in a high-speed chase that followed a CIT robbery in Westbank in East London.
Multiple gunshots were fired and explosives were used by suspects travelling in four vehicles.
On 19 July 2023, two guards were wounded shortly after 8 p.m. when robbers blew up a CIT vehicle on the N2 near Mdantsane.
The stretch of road between Berlin and eQonce (formerly King Williams Town) was closed for over an hour as traffic had to be diverted from the crime scene.
On 24 July 2023, explosives were used again when a CIT vehicle was blown up on the R75 just before the Peddie turnoff.
On 28 July 2023, suspects pulled off a heist on Govan Mbeki Avenue in the Gqeberha CBD when guards were collecting money at 10 am in the morning.
No explosives were used nor were any shots fired, however, suspects fled with money and one firearm stolen from a guard.
On 24 August 2023, traffic again came to a standstill on the N2 just outside of East London on the Komga side when a CIT van was blown up by heavily armed suspects on a sunny afternoon.
All these robberies are still under investigation by the Hawks.
