Another accused in the dock for shooting of Kouga councillor

The fifth suspect arrested in connection with the shooting of a DA councillor in Kouga made a brief appearance in the Humansdorp Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Councillor Jaques Alexander was shot and wounded outside of the Kouga Municipality's headquarters on Da Gama Road in February.

Andy Davids, 34, was arrested on 24 March when members of the TRT swooped on his Humansdorp home.

His arrest came almost a month after that of his four co-accused, who have also been charged with attempted murder.

On Tuesday, Davids appeared in court under heavy police guard.

He stood quietly dressed in a black jeans and a black Fabiani jacket.

His attorney, Ignatius Heyns of Lessing, Heyns & Van der Bank Incorporated, informed the court that he had consulted the State Prosecutor who would handle the bail application.

Heyns said he was advised to request a postponement to 19 April, which is the day on which his clients' four co-accused are also set to appear.

On this day, a date for a formal bail application in respect of all the accused will be arranged.

Gqeberha attorney Bond Nyoka will appear on behalf of Mthumzi Lani, Lutho Mbatha, Luciano Jacobs, and Athenkosi Gidane.

Davids will remain in custody.
