Andy Kawa rape trial delayed due to sick accused

The trial against the man who allegedly raped Gauteng woman Andy Kawa was postponed in the Gqeberha High Court on Monday.

State Advocate Ismat Cerfontein was set to cross-examine the accused, Moses Gqesha when the trial resumed.

She could, however, not proceed because Gqesha was not feeling well.

Though the accused's condition is unclear, he was visibly disoriented and unsteady on his feet.

He was seen stumbling down the steps to the court holding cells, with the assistance of a court orderly.

Gqesha denies raping Kawa on 9 December 2010 along Kings Beach.

He has pleaded not guilty to rape, as well as charges of kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

During his testimony, Gqesha said that he met "a woman" who offered him a job whilst he was busy doing his duties as a car guard.

He claims to have accepted the job and left with the woman and they eventually ended up along Kings Beach.

According to the accused, this was where he and the woman had consensual sexual intercourse.

The woman in question paid him R200 when the "job" was done, Gqesha testified on Friday.

The trial will resume on Tuesday.
